"Seat belts save lives and lessen the severity of accident related injuries," said Police Chief Daniel McMahon.
"Click it or Ticket" is a campaign by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to reduce fatalities and injuries and increase safety on the roads through education and enforcement of seat belt laws.
New York seat belt laws call for the following standards:
- All front seat occupants of all ages must be properly secured
- All rear seat passengers under 16 must be properly secured (seat belts are optional but recommended for adults in New York)
- A federally-approved child safety seat must be attached to a vehicle by a seat belt or universal child restraint anchorage system for all children up to the age of 4
- Children under 4 but over 40 pounds can be secured in a booster seat with a lap and shoulder safety belt Children ages 4 through 7 must be properly secured in the restraint system appropriate for the child's height and weight
- A vehicle's seat belt is not a child restraint system
- Children in booster seats must be secured with a lap/shoulder seat belt and never only a lap belt
